I did not expect the sport of surfing to have anything in common with equestrian sports. But it turns out that Surfer Mentality would be an asset in a horseback rider’s arsenal.
After a tough fall from a horse, most begin to ask questions. What went wrong? Why did my horse do what he did? How can I make sure this never happens again? In contrast, surfers know that waves will crash them under water, and that it’s an inevitable part of the ride. I’m guessing surfers don’t ask themselves or their trainer, “What was wrong with that wave? How can I control nature so that never happens again?”
Additionally, surfers must possess plenty of patience. They literally need to wait for the wave to come to them.
Maybe I could be more patient. When I ask for the canter and it doesn’t happen, perhaps I need to take a moment to check that my aids are correct. My immediate frustration and “here we go again” attitude could be changed with a healthy dose of patience.
If that's not enough, see ten more good reasons to adopt a Surfer Mindset. Gnarly, dude.
