Like equestrian sports, doubles tennis is played with a partner. Granted, the tennis partner stands on two legs, uses the bathroom before entering the court, and isn’t spooked when the wind blows from the east.
Horses are more complicated partners:
Uncommunicative yet full of feelings and emotions.
Perpetually hungry yet weighing in at over 1,000 pounds.
Brilliant recallers - they remember four years ago when you accidently tightened the girth on the 3rd hole instead of the 2nd and will forever flinch when they see that piece of leather coming their way.
Tennis outfits are cute. Especially in July. At a horseshow, when the temperatures hover around 90 degrees Fahrenheit, things go from warm to hot quickly. Heat is trapped under your helmet, and sweat runs down the sleeves of your black show coat. In contrast, tennis players are chilled out in matching short white skirts and ankle socks.
Tennis stirs up fond memories of the time my husband and I were members at the Davisville Tennis Club in Toronto. That was before we moved to Michigan for a business opportunity and away from friends and family. Sometimes I feel the sting of homesickness. But it’s horses and the barn family that keeps me here – grounded and grateful.
