There’s a ripple of anticipation as the horses wait to see if they’ll be loaded onto the trailer…

At our barn, not all horses go to the shows.

It’s probably like being a kid and waiting to find out if you’ll be picked for the neighborhood baseball team. At night, I bet the horses left behind try to convince each other that they don’t care.

“Who wants to be in their dumb horse show anyway?”

Our horses arrive with an air of excitement. They look around, sniff the air, call out with a whinny to see if anyone responds - maybe an old friend or someone they met last time.

I like to think they’re assessing the competition, deciding who might throw a shoe and evaluating which horses will require plenty of lunging. Later, they’ll gossip among themselves.
