School Days

Am I alone in feeling giddy when I see back-to-school supplies in grocery stores? In early fall, I remember all the questions I asked myself as a kid. Will my friends be in my class, how much homework will I have, what will the new teacher be like?

Sometimes I pause with my cart as if I’m really going to buy a spiral notebook, a pink eraser, or a geometry set in a metal case– do they even exist anymore?

But then I move on with only the smallest twinge of regret. I’m happy to be past all those school days and to have moved comfortably on into adulthood.

It’s only in the schooling ring, with what feels like seventy other riders and horses, that I truly appreciate those times as a kid when I was scared, when learning was critical, and when I felt I wanted do something bigger than myself.
